Olympic gold medallist boosts chances of becoming SW MEP by claiming third spot on Conservative list for 2014 election

Wednesday, 31 July 2013
Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell OBE has boosted his chances of becoming a Conservative member of the European Parliament for the South West of England and Gibraltar after next year's European elections after being elected into third place on the list by party members in the region.

Mr Cracknell revealed his intention to stand for election back in June saying "if you want the system to change you have to be part of it. There's no point moaning from the sidelines."

The region elects six MEPs and currently the Conservatives have three MEPs.

Incumbent MEPs Ashley Fox and Julie Girling were elected first and second respectively, virtually guaranteeing they will continue their work in Brussels and Strasbourg for the region following the elections next May.

The results of the party member ballot were revealed at midday on 31 July and the list of six is completed by Georgina Butler, Sophie Swire and Melissa Maynard.

Incumbent MEP Giles Chichester is retiring and so did not stand for re-election.
