Locals have 'no hope' of resolution says Gibraltar MEP trolled for boycott Spain calls

Monday, 19 August 2013
Conservative Gibraltar MEP Julie Girling, who is currently visiting the Rock, has this evening said in an interview with ITV News that locals had "no hope that things are going to get better soon."

Since I’ve been in Gibraltar, I’ve picked up from local people and local authorities that no, there’s no hope that things will get better soon. Spain are insisting on pursuing their claims; they have made it extremely difficult for people to cross the border […] I’m told that the border guards on the Spanish side get their messages by text and they are told when to hold up and when not to hold up - entirely pre-meditated to cause the maximum the disruption here in Gibraltar," she said.

Following her call earlier this month for British holidaymakers to boycott their summer holidays in Spain and either take a staycation in the UK or visit another part of Europe as a means of protest, Mrs Girling admitted that Spanish social media users had been using Twitter to insult her "personal experience, my private life, my health" but that she would not give up fighting for the Gibraltarians.

"It may be that to be trolled goes with the job. However, the Spanish Twitter trolls aren't doing their argument any favours by trolling me,she said. "Their abuse shows they have no argument as they can only resort to the lowest form of language.

"The people of Gibraltar need our support. They will not be bullied by the Spanish Government or by a minority of the Spanish people. Neither will I."
