Gibraltar MEP files official complaint after suffering lengthy delay at the border on recent visit

Friday, 6 September 2013
Sir Graham Watson, the Liberal Democrat MEP for Gibraltar, has revealed in a tweet that he submitted an official complaint form after suffering delays at the border on his latest visit to the Rock.

In his submission, Sir Graham said he was delayed by an hour and a half as he attempted to cross the border into Gibraltar on the evening of 1 September 2013 and his ID and driving licence was demanded of him by the Spanish authorities. These actions, as affirmed on the form, have “deprived [me] of the acquired and recognised right of free movement which I should enjoy as an EU citizen approved under the EU Treaties”.

Sir Graham also tweeted a photograph of the queues on Thursday which he stated was “unacceptable”, when vehicle waited for three hours to cross into Spain.

His latest visit came as the European Commission responded to calls by South West MEPs and indeed the British Government for a fact-finding mission of observers to be sent to monitor and assess the scale of the delays at the border with Spain. Despite calls from Spain to expand their role, the Commission have stated that the observers have a "very clear mandate" and will focus "solely" on border issues.
