'If you go on holiday, never tell anyone you're an MEP', SW MEP tells the Guardian

Saturday, 10 May 2014
South West Conservative MEP Julie Girling is in the Guardian this week talking about her working week as an MEP as part of the newspapers’ collaboration feature about Europe. In her piece (wrongly named as Julia Girling) she admits that “being an MEP is you lose touch with your friends a bit”, laments at the sheer size of the South West constituency, and says she “tries not to do anything on Sundays” but perhaps a bit of gardening. She also offers the following tip for MEPs:

"If you go on holiday, never tell anyone you're an MEP. If it comes out – because I forget and say I live and work in Brussels - I say that I work for a thinktank. It sounds awful, but people are very aggressive. Most people have got strong views on Europe considering how little they know. Very often they're anti. If you were to do a word association game with people and say "Europe", "member of European parliament", the next thing which would spring to their mind is expenses, not hard work. I'm very happy to defend my corner on that, but not on holiday."
